Unfortunately, you can not use SVG file since they are not supported by WordPress because of security. However, you can enable them with a plugin, but since we have not tested any of them we can not guarantee that it will work properly with our theme. So the better solution is to avoid usage of the svg files.
For the Custom icon in the menu, in which sense you want to add it, do you want it to be First level menu item or just an icon need menu, for the second you an go to Appearance > Widgets and there add widget in these two widget areas
The widget you need to add there is for example Elated Social Icon widget or Text widget with raw html that will display desired icon.
