I installed the demo info but I couldn't quite work out what and how you did it - please can you point me in the right direction? It looks like they are "elated portfolio" I have created a portfolio and added pictures but I don't know what to put in on the page - do I need to created in to the "slider revolution"? what in Visual Composer do I need to insert to get this to display? I presume I insert a "page" and then a shortcode or VC component? Do I also need to select a page template as well ? Which one? Can you also have the same look & feel using blog posts too?

Yes, that page is set up using Portfolio List element used in that page. But first make sure you have Portfolios with set desired Images ( that you want to appear on your home page ) as Featured Images of your Portfolios that will be displayed https://www.screencast.com/t/VH0M4kJZ .
