Unfortunately our theme is not compatible with the newer versions of font-awesome and thus you will not be able to use them in this way. However you could use ether a shortcode or the html markup for any font-awesome icon that you have and place it into the header using a widget area.
You can achieve this by navigating to Appearance > Widgets > create a Custom Widget Area add ether a text widget or a custom html one and input the shortcode or html markup(see image bellow)
After this simply navigate back to the menu item you wish to put the icon in and select the custom widget area you just created(see image bellow).
