In order for this to show anything you will have to navigate to Appearance > Widgets > Side Area > and add the Navigation Menu widget and select the navigation you'd prefer. (see image below)
After this you can edit the style of the Side Area by navigating to Kodell Options > Side Area. In order to set the star like pattern you will need to select the sidearea-img-1.png for the Pattern Background Image (see image below)
