So, first level item that is holding wide menu should be set as seen on first screenshot. Second level item is actually wide menu column title, and third level menu items are rows in column.
Note that wide menu can have up to four columns. Hope this was helpful.

You can try to remove unused menu items from other menus, must have some leftovers if you have imported demo content. Maybe it could help. Let me know how things went.

i also read the doc, but i did not see anyinformation about the mega menu..
