I can make a clean install with imported content work.

However,  I'm trying to update an older (not your) theme with your theme.

I tried initially to simply activate your theme, but I could not get the main menu or any layouts / widgets /etc to work properly.

Are there steps you can share to migrating / porting over my content?

    Hello,

Could you please explain us precisely? We can not figure out what is your issue exactly? In order to update theme, except WP default themes, you need to keep that theme active.

    Thanks

Simple. When I activate your theme it breaks my site. I cannot get your theme to work. No menus, no sidebars.. etc. It's scattered all over the place.

    Hi Opusuno,

You can't update the some other theme, with our one, because this simply can't work. There are differences in theme codes, files, and classes.

However, if you install our theme on the same domain as you old one (install, not update) you should be able to use all of the wp default posts and pages with our theme also, you will just not have the same layout as on your old website.

We recommend that you install our theme and its demo content on your local server, upload the theme demo content, import a content from your live website to your local server https://www.elegantthemes.com/blog/tips-tricks/import-export-wordpress-website and replace our theme demo content with your own.

Once you have done this, you can migrate your local website to live by following these instructions:

You can follow this article to migrate your site from test to live server or any other migration http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-move-wordpress-from-local-server-to-live-site/

This works for any migration, local to live, test to live, live to live, etc.

Also you can manually move Elated Options from test database to live.

You can manually move that values from local database to live database, you can find that values inside your local WordPress database/wp-options table/ option_name column is eltd_options_news and just copy whole values from that column and paste on your live database. Don't forget to replace all url links from localhost to live url.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you, thanks!
